The sculpture Sólfar (Sun Voyager) by the artist Jón Gunnar
Árnason (1931–1989) is a modern sculpture made to resemble a
Viking ship. It is situated at the waterfront near the old harbor
of Reykjavík City Center on the street Skúlagata. Viking ship is a
collective term for ships used during the Viking Age (800-1100) in
Northern Europe. The ships are normally divided into classes based
on size and function. For some of the tourists the ship reminds
them of a big insect with 10 legs when they look at it from a
certain view.The artist was fascinated by the
sun and his work was in many ways influenced by it. The sculpture
was unveiled in 1990. Standing by this sculpture during
